Athlone Golf Club contend for All-Ireland Junior Cup honours

Athlone Golf Club will hope to return a coveted green pennant to the club when they contend for All-Ireland Junior Cup honours at Millicent Golf Club County Kildare on Thursday afternoon.

Athlone Golf Club bridged a 31 year gap when the men's representative team claimed the Connacht Junior Cup final in July and now the management and players are preparing for the All-Ireland stage of the competition.

The team has been drawn to play Curragh Golf Club on Thursday afternoon at 12.30pm and should they overcome this challenge, they will then play either Clontarf Golf Club (County Dublin) or Clandeboye Golf Club (County Down) in a semi-final encounter on Friday morning.

Team captain Marc Butler praised his teammates for their collective contributions in their recent provincial win.

"We have two teenagers playing on the team, Taylor Kelly (13) and Cian Mannion (15). Both players contributed to this long overdue success," Butler said.

The junior cup team played five matches on their way to Connacht success, losing on just three occasions.

Butler and his teammates will be hoping to carry such form into the All-Ireland stage of the competition when play gets underway on Thursday.
