Lions Club needs volunteers for Christmas food appeal

The Athlone Lions Club is calling for volunteers to help with its annual Christmas Food Appeal as its hampers are needed more than ever this year.

People who are interested in volunteering are invited to attend a meeting at the Sheraton, Athlone next Thursday, November 21, at 6pm.

The hampers have helped many families in the past with a record 154 hampers delivered throughout the community last year.

Christmas can be a very difficult time of year for some families who have been struggling all year.

“Many families, all around Ireland, have had a tough few years due to the downturn in the economy. This time of year can be particularly stressful for parents who are not just worried about whether they can afford presents for their children, but whether they can even feed them,” said Michael McDonnell, president of the Athlone Lions Club. “It is of the upmost importance that we not only acknowledge these people at Christmas, but actively try to help,” he added.

The first stage of the Athlone Lions Christmas Food Appeal will take place in Tesco on the last Friday 29th and Saturday 30th of the month.

Athlone Lions Club was formed some 40 years ago. It has provided year round support and assistance to the vulnerable and those in need.
