Former Athlone Mayor Brendan McFadden dies

Brendan McFadden, a former Mayor of Athlone, died suddenly yesterday (Sunday).

The deceased is from one of the town's most well-known political families.

He is the father of Fine Gael TD for Longford/Westmeath, Nicky McFadden, and the town's current Mayor, Cllr Gabrielle McFadden.

A native of Dunard, The Batteries, Athlone, he is a former ESB employee and was a long-time member of Westmeath County Council and Athlone Urban District Council.

Mr McFadden was first elected to Westmeath County Council in 1979. His role as a local representative ended in 2003, when his daughter Nicky was co-opted onto Westmeath County Council due to his retirement.

Nicky was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease last year. 

Mr McFadden was predeceased by his wife Kitty.

His death is deeply regretted by his loving daughters Nicky, Gabrielle and Aine, sister Baba, grandchildren Caren, Eoin, Katie and Luke, great-grandchild Matilda, son-in-law Brian, relatives, neighbours and friends.

His remains will repose at The Strand Funeral Home in Athlone tomorrow, Tuesday, from 5pm, with removal at 7.45pm to the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, arriving at 8 o'clock.

Funeral Mass will take place at 11am on Wednesday, with burial afterwards in Coosan Cemetery.

The family has requested that the house remain private, with family flowers only, and donations in lieu to the RNLI, Athlone.
