Athlone houses likely to flood as water rises

Houses in Athlone are expected to flood today (Monday) because water levels on the Shannon are continuing to rise.

A statement which was issued at noon today by Westmeath County Council said water levels on the Shannon will continue to increase during the coming days.

'The Council is in receipt of data from the ESB which predicts that water levels will continue to rise for the next 5 days,' the statement said.

'This predictive model indicates that flooding of the lowest houses in Athlone in the Deerpark area and Carrickobrien / Clonbonny could occur today and it is anticipated that further houses are at risk of flooding over the next five days.

'Westmeath County Council has activated its Flood Emergency Response Plan and a meeting of the interagency Response Committee has taken place.

'As part of this plan, a range of precautionary measures are being implemented to reduce the risk of flooding and to provide assistance in the areas at most risk.

'The public are advised to be aware of the current risks associated with the River Shannon and to take whatever precautions you can if you live in a vulnerable area.'

The statement added that further, more detailed, advice was available on the council's website at: www.westmeathcoco.ie.
