Westmeath Independent Sports Awards launched as 11 monthly winners are selected

The 2017 Westmeath Independent Sports Awards, sponsored by the Shamrock Lodge Hotel, were launched last week and 11 of the 12 monthly winners have now been revealed.

The Westmeath Independent Sports Awards will take place in the Shamrock Lodge Hotel on Friday evening, January 26, 2018.

The December award winner will be announced shortly, and all 12 monthly winners will be presented with their awards at the gala awards function.

The overall winner will be chosen from the 12 monthly winners, while readers have the opportunity to cast their vote for the Readers’ Choice Award (see more details in this newspaper in the coming weeks).

The Westmeath Independent Sports Awards are organised in conjunction with the Shamrock Lodge Hotel.

Tickets for the awards night will be on sale at the Westmeath Independent offices in Athlone in the coming weeks.

With the 2017 awards taking place on an earlier date than in recent years, the countdown will be well and truly on for the event as soon as the festive period is over.

The overall Sports Star of the Year and Readers’ Choice Award winner will be revealed on the awards night on January 26. Both of these awards will be selected from the group of monthly winners.

January - Grace Halligan (basketball)

February - Joe Carmody (soccer)

March - Kolo Kiripati (rugby)

April - Kate Derwin (equestrian)

May - Laura Brennan (gaelic football)

June - Joe Ward (boxing)

July - Brian Stack & Niall McInerney (gaelic football)

August - Robbie Powell & Rebecca Lowe (swimming)

September - John Gilligan (hurling)

October - Martin Ward (martial arts)

November - Dylan Gavin (soccer)
