Two local students win national writing competition

Two local students were among the overall winners of a national student writing competition, hosted by national and local newspapers.
NewsBrands Ireland and Local Ireland, the representative bodies for Ireland’s national and local news publishers, asked school kids from first year to sixth year to write a short feature or opinion piece about the Coronavirus crisis.
The result was overwhelming, with over 600 entrants from all over the country. The judges were all experienced newspaper journalists. This initiative was an extension of the Press Pass news literacy programme for Transition Year students.
A winner was chosen in three categories, junior, intermediate and senior.

Two of the three winners were in this region, the intermediate winner was Clare Reidy, a Transition Year student of Our Lady’s Bower and the junior winner was Tiernan Finn, a second year student, of Garbally College in Ballinasloe.
