Deep sadness at death of community centre manager in Athlone

Warm tributes have been paid this week to Athlone's Jennifer (Jenny) Kirwan following the sad news of her death on Wednesday.

A hugely popular figure locally, Jenny had been the manager of St Kieran's Community Centre in Tormey Villas.

She died peacefully at her home in Clonbrusk, following a long illness.

Predeceased by her beloved husband, Tony, she is sadly missed by her loving daughter Amy, sons Leon, Jay and Neil, sister Linda, son-in-law Adam, daughter-in-law Debra, in-laws, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives and many friends.

The AC Celtic football club, which plays on the pitch alongside St Kieran's Community Centre, expressed its "great sadness" at her passing.

"She worked so closely with us down through the years to bring the club forward and with her help the club has grown in stature," it said.

Another tribute, from Athlone Community Radio, said she had always been helpful and supportive in facilitating broadcasts from the community centre.

"She will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure to meet her and work with her. Jenny always had a big smile and a welcome for us when we appeared with our equipment.

"She took part in our documentaries, giving us a tour of the centre, and we will miss her unique voice, her kind words and helpful advice," said the station.

On Facebook, the St Kieran's Childcare Centre posted a video yesterday of children playing and wrote, "On a day filled with sadness, it's great to see the happiness of children. It always lifts your heart, and Jenny would be so proud!

"Rest in peace Jenny Kirwan, we are all thinking of you and your family at this time xx"

A live stream of the funeral Mass at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Coosan will take place at 12.30pm tomorrow (Saturday) and can be viewed at the following link: https://www.churchservices.tv/coosan

May she rest in peace.
