Athlone Film Club returns as 'Hen' opens new season

Athlone Film Club is delighted to announce its return to the Dean Crowe Theatre tomorrow evening (Tuesday), September 15.

The 2026-2027 season kicks off with the highly acclaimed film 'Hen'. Told entirely from the perspective of its avian protagonist, Hen follows a chicken who escapes an industrial farm only to find herself navigating the pecking order of a crumbling seaside restaurant in Greece.

As she fights to protect her eggs, she becomes an unwitting witness to the complex human lives around her as the restaurant is caught up in greed, smuggling and the migrant crisis.

“Life seen from the perspective of a plucky chicken makes for a compelling drama,” said Screen International when reviewing the film.

All involved in the club are very much looking forward to welcoming back both regular and new cinephiles to the Dean Crowe Theatre, Athlone. Doors open on Tuesday, September 15 at 7.30pm and the film starts at 8pm. Entry is €10 per film, cash only please.

Athlone Film Club was set up in 2008 under the patronage of the Dean Crowe Theatre Trust and aims to give local audiences the opportunity to see a range of world and classic films that rarely make it to commercial cinemas.
