Bomb disposal squad called to 'suspicious device' in Athlone

Army bomb disposal experts were called when a "suspicious device" was found in the centre of Athlone this afternoon (Friday).

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit from Custume Barracks was contacted when Gardai received reports about the suspicious device which was found in the Market Square area at approximately 1.30pm.

A spokesperson from the Garda Press Office said the scene was cordoned off and the device was removed by the Defence Forces.

No further details were available at the time of writing, but the Garda spokesperson said enquiries were ongoing in relation to the matter.
