No weekend arrests in Athlone despite "festive mood"

Despite what was described by local Garda Sergeant Andrew Haran as “a festive mood” in Athlone over the Bank Holiday weekend due to the re-opening of outdoor hospitality services on Bank Holiday Monday, there were no public order incidents and no arrests were made.

“There were certainly a lot more people around, particularly on Bank Holiday Monday” said Sergeant Haran “and you could describe the mood and the atmosphere as being festive, but everyone was generally well behaved and there were no public order incidents and no arrests.”

Sergeant Haran reminded members of the public to continue to adhere to NPET guidelines in relation to social distancing, washing of hands and wearing a face mask in indoor settings in an effort to combat the spread of Covid-19.

“Generally we find that most people are continuing to be compliant with public health advice, but it is very important at this stage that we don’t get complacent” he added.
