No candidate reached the quota on the second count. As the candidate with the lowest number of votes, Vincent Beirne has been excluded and his surplus will now be distributed.

11:20 pm: Ballinasloe native Aishling Dolan said while there is a lot of ground for Fine Gael to cover in the upcoming counts, "we have increased out first preference vote to roughly 17%", and that the party also increased its showing in the local elections as well.

She also said that the Fine Gael campaign took place under very sad circumstances, with the loss of Cllr John Naughten. "It's been a very difficult time, and there is a community in shock over this.," she said, adding that it has been "heartening" to see her supporters out in recent weeks "dropping leaflets and doing everything they can for Fine Gael".

11:00 pm: Claire Kerrane says she is "honoured and privileged" at the number of votes she gained in this election, and delighted that "so many people put their faith in me again". She said it shows that her election four years ago was more than just "a good day out for Sinn Féin".

10:20 pm: It has calmed down a bit here in the Hyde Centre, as we await the results of the second count, which will include the 1,719 surplus from Micheal Fitzmaurice.

9:35 pm: The Fitzmaurice team celebrate their success

9.20pm: Athlone resident and Ballygar native Tony Pettit (well known in Athlone business circles) among Martin Daly's supporters who are delighted with Daly's showing in this election.

8.56pm: Michael Fitzmaurice elected on the first count...

8.35pm: The very sad death in early October of Drum native John Naughten, who was chosen to contest this election for Fine Gael, has obviously cast a long shadow over the entire Roscommon-Galway constituency. Michael Fitzmaurice has just told the Westmeath Independent that his thoughts are with the Naughten family today.

8.28pm:

A smiling Claire Kerrane of Sinn Féin about to be interviewed as she looks set to retain her seat.

8.05pm

Ciaran Mullooly has opened the door on a potential wider alliance between Independent Ireland and other independents as well as hailing the work ethic of party colleague and soon-to-be re-elected Roscommon Galway TD Michael Fitzmaurice.

See story here

8.03pm: Martin Daly says he's "a little overwhelmed" by the support he has received - with the first time candidate almost certain to be elected.

7.59pm: The cheers of Martin Daly's supporters and canvassers show the confidence they have that he will be elected as the first count is awaited.

7:15pm: The adjudication of the doubtful votes has finally wrapped up. We are still waiting for news on the first count.

5.30pm

The adjudication of doubtful votes will take place in about 15 minutes, it has been announced.

5.22pm:

Fitzmaurice and Kerrane set to steal the show in Roscommon Galway

Michael Fitzmaurice may have lost much of his electoral hinterland in East Galway in the redrawn Roscommon Galway constituency, but he remains an electoral phenomenon, writes Tadhg Carey.

Representing Independent Ireland, the Glinsk native looks to have even surpassed his 28.67% share of the first preference vote from 2020, with an eye-watering 29.12% share this time around, based on tallies.

Sinn Féin made electoral history in 2020 in this constituency when Claire Kerrane was elected and she is set to return to Dáil Eireann, also with an increased share of the first preference vote.

Her tallies indicate a vote of 19.5%, up from 17.6%.

Of course, the departure of another popular vote getter Denis Naughten has opened up a significant batch of votes. But even with that caveat, it's a hugely impressive performance by both Fitzmaurice and Kerrane to increase their vote share, if the tallies are correct.

Elsewhere, the third seat looks destined to go to Fianna Fáil - in the shape of Ballygar's Martin Daly.

Daly has implemented a huge canvass in recent weeks, including a focus on the South Roscommon area - and it appears to have paid off - as he is strong favourite to secure the third seat in this three-seat constituency.

16:50: No major updates here so far. Sorting of votes still underway before the counting of votes will begin.

15:05 pm: Outgoing Senator Eugene Murphy has conceded defeat in this election, acknowledging that he "does not have the numbers" to catch up with either Martin Daly or Claire Kerrane.

2:35 pm: It has been announced here in the Hyde Centre that the first count will now proceed.

2:15 pm: The estimated quota in Roscommon Galway is 10,156. By those figures, Michael Fitzmaurice is likely to get in on the first count, with Claire Kerrane and Martin Daly most likely to take the final two seats in this three-seat constituency.

2:08 pm: Overall picture update: 124 out of 124 boxes tallied (100% open), here is the overall picture in the Roscommon/Galway constituency.

12.56pm: Fitzmaurice rules on home turf! One would expect Michael Fitzmaurice to get most of the votes in the Glinsk NS box as it's just a few miles from where he lives. But the extent of his domimance there is worth noting - according to the tally, he got 371 votes. "Is there even 371 people in Glinsk," quipped somebody in the Hyde Centre. The next highest vote in Glinsk was Martin Daly (42), with three candidates getting no votes at all and two candidates getting a mere one each!

12.24pm: It's looking good for Michael Fitzmaurice, Claire Kerrane and Martin Daly - with many people predicting this trio will be elected in that order (see overall update below).

The problem for Aisling Dolan is that her Fine Gael running mate Dympna Daly-Finn does not appear to be getting enough votes in order for the Ballinasloe woman to benefit from transfers.

Fianna Fáil will be pleased with the vote of Martin Daly, a first time candidate from Ballygar, and it appears very unlikely that former Fianna Fáil TD Eugene Murphy can spring a surprise at Daly's expense.

11.28am: Many political observers and analysts reckoned Roscommon/Galway was one of the most predictable constituencies in the country and tallies so far are bearing this out. "It's over," says one seasoned political observer, who predicts that Michael Fitzmaurice, Claire Kerrane and Martin Daly will be elected, with Daly taking the third seat ahead of Aisling Dolan. One of the reasons things don't look promising for Dolan is that almost all of the Ballinasloe boxes have been tallied.

9.46am: Speaking to RTE Radio earlier, Independent Ireland candidate Michael Fitzmaurice - who is widely expected to retain his seat - said he would not pay too much attention to last night's exit poll. The "proof of the pudding" would be when the actual votes are counted, he said. He also said he expects Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael to form the next government, but that they would need "a third stool or a fourth stool" to prop them up. It's early to be talking about the next governent though - let the counting continue first!
