Motorist recorded driving over 140km/h in 100 zone in Co Wickow

A motorist was recorded driving 141 km/h in a 100 km/h zone in Newtownmountkennedy, Co. Wicklow, as part of the Bank Holiday speeding operation.

The operation, which began on Thursday, has seen 56 people arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

100 drivers were detected for speeding offences during the second day of the operation.

Over 115 drivers were detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.

Other high speeds include 130km/h in a 60km/h zone on the R188, Drung, Co. Cavan, while a driver was recorded going 124km/h in an 80km/h zone on the N51 Dunmoe, Navan Co. Meath.

Another motorist was driving 85km/h in a 50km/h zone on Watery Lane, Swords, Co. Dublin.

The total number of fatalities on Irish roads to date this year is 70.
