Athlone Railway Bridge to light up in support of Galway hurling team
Athlone Railway Bridge will be illuminated in the maroon and white colours of Galway this weekend in support of the county's appearance in Sunday's All-Ireland senior hurling final.
Irish Rail has stated that it will mark the county's achievement in reaching the showpiece occasion with the symbolic gesture in support of Galway's All-Ireland final quest at Croke Park on Sunday.
Barry Kenny, Irish Rail Corporate Communications Manager, also confirmed to the Westmeath Independent that the Athlone Railway Bridge will be alight with the green and red colours of Mayo in support of their All-Ireland final ambitions at Croke Park on Sunday, July 26.
It has become tradition to see the Athlone Railway Bridge illuminated in the colours of county teams from Connacht participating in All-Ireland finals in support of the team and supporters as they cross the River Shannon.
This will be Galway's first appearance in an All-Ireland senior hurling final since 2018 when they were defeated by Sunday's opponents Limerick.
In 2017, Galway won the Liam McCarthy Cup for the first time since 1988 when they defeated Waterford on a 0-26 to 2-17 scoreline.
Meanwhile, Mayo are looking to win their first All-Ireland senior football title since 1951 when they play the reigning champions Kerry at GAA HQ on Sunday week.
