Council issues 'no swim' advice following concerns over toxic algae in Lough Ree

Westmeath County Council has issued a 'no swim' warning following concerns over toxic algae in Lough Ree.

The local authority issued a statement following reports of a potential toxic algal bloom in Lough Ree in recent days.

While the algal bloom remains unconfirmed, the council advised the public not to swim or allow animals access to the shore as harmful toxins may be present.
