Local language school hosts Saudi Arabian culture day
Saudi students participating in the Wathiq Programme, led by Director Tariq Alyahya, hosted a vibrant Saudi Cultural Day in Athlone secondary school Coláiste Chiaráin, to celebrate the country's rich heritage, while also marking the 20th anniversary of the programme’s presence in Ireland.
The event brought together host families, local community members, Shannon Academy of English staff and Athlone Chamber of Commerce CEO Tommy Hogan, who joined students in celebrating Saudi traditions and strengthening cultural ties between Saudi Arabia and Ireland.
Visitors enjoyed a wide range of cultural exhibits showcasing Saudi heritage, including traditional Saudi clothing, handicrafts, heritage displays, and authentic Saudi products. One of the highlights of the event was the traditional Saudi Ardah performance, which captivated the audience and offered a unique glimpse into the Kingdom’s cultural identity.

Photos: Terry O’Neill.Speaking during the event, Tariq Alyahya, Director of the Wathiq Program, emphasised the importance of introducing Saudi culture to international communities.
“Our goal is not only to provide students with an educational experience abroad, but also to encourage them to become ambassadors of their country.
“Through events like this, we proudly share Saudi Arabia’s identity, values, hospitality, and rich cultural heritage with people from around the world," Mr Alyahya said.
Guests were also treated to traditional Saudi coffee and dates, generously provided by the programme’s official sponsor, Riyadh Roastery, allowing attendees to experience one of Saudi Arabia’s most cherished symbols of hospitality.
Mr. Alyahya also highlighted that over the years, the Saudi students have become one family, building lasting friendships while representing their country with pride and respect throughout their stay in Ireland.
He expressed his sincere appreciation to Shannon Academy of English for its outstanding partnership over the past two decades.
He noted that the academy has played a vital role in the success of the Wathiq Program by delivering high-quality English language education, supporting students throughout their stay, and ensuring a welcoming and enriching learning environment from their arrival in Ireland until their departure.
Celebrating 20 years of continuous success, the Wathiq Programme continues to strengthen educational and cultural exchange between Saudi Arabia and Ireland, providing students with valuable academic opportunities while promoting mutual understanding.
