Ukrainian artist Valeriia Poliushko

New mural set for Athlone's Parnell Square

A striking new mural is taking shape in Athlone's Parnell Square, where Ukrainian artist Valeriia Poliushko has begun work on a major public artwork celebrating the area's rich history.

Now based in Ireland, Valeriia has earned recognition for her distinctive artistic style, bringing a unique perspective to Irish landscapes through atmospheric oil paintings.

Her latest project will add a vibrant new landmark to the heart of Athlone while reflecting cherished memories of Parnell Square's past.

Preparations for the mural have been supported by local volunteers and businesses.

The Athlone Family Resource Centre expressed its gratitude to Simon from Woodie's, who volunteered his time to whitewash the old Fisheries Wall in readiness for the artwork.

The centre also thanked Liam of O'Connors Fabrications for carrying out a thorough power wash of the wall and for supporting the project.

In a social media post, the Athlone Family Resource Centre said the "very special" mural is expected to become a colourful new feature of Parnell Square, reflecting some memories of the areas past.
