Baker's Stateside joy as Galway Boston claim championship crown

Westmeath senior footballer Senan Baker continued his winning form Stateside on Sunday evening when helping Galway Boston win the Boston Northeast senior football championship.

The Caulry club footballer played a pivotal role as Galway Boston claimed a successive championship title following a 2-24 to 4-15 win over Aidan McAnespies before a large attendance in the Irish Cultural Center, in Canton, Massachusetts.

The teams had met two weeks previously in the Northeast senior championship when Baker kicked 0-11 points, including three two pointers to secure a four point victory in that contest.

Fellow Westmeath footballer and Shandonagh club player Danny Scahill was also on the Galway Boston team who now play Ulster at the USGAA Finals on Saturday evening at the Massachusetts venue.

Of course, the talented forward will be remembered for his four point haul when subbed on during Westmeath's Leinster senior football championship win over Dublin on May 17, including a 69th minute levelling point which sent the game to extra-time and ultimately, a historic provincial win for the Lake County.

Meanwhile, Baker's club Caulry suffered their second loss of this year's Westmeath senior football championship when losing out to Garrycastle by the minimum in Pairc Chiarain Athlone on Friday night (read match report in Wednesday's print edition).
