Westmeath senior football manager mourning uncle's death in road crash

Westmeath senior football manager Mark McHugh is mourning the death of his uncle in a road traffic collision in Cavan yesterday (Monday) afternoon.

Former Donegal 1992 All-Ireland winning football player James McHugh died in the incident involving a car and a van on the N3 at Drummallaght, between Virgina and Cavan town.

A woman in her 60s who was a passenger in the car, was seriously injured and is undergoing treatment in Beaumont Hospital.

James is a brother of Mark McHugh's father, Martin, who was also part of the first Donegal team to win an senior All-Ireland football title 34 years ago.

The Kilcar native represented his county from 1990 to 1998, scoring a point in the county's historic All-Ireland final win over Dublin in Croke Park.

He was recognised for his contribution to Donegal's All-Ireland win when named on the 1992 All Stars team.

McHugh also won two Ulster senior football championships in 1990 and 1992.

His nephew Mark was appointed Westmeath senior manager last September, and in May he led the county to only its second-ever Leinster championship success.
