South Roscommon All-Ireland winner to embark on Kenyan charity trip

A local Gaelic football star - and recent All-Ireland Intermediate champion – will be among a host of inter-county footballers to embark on a fundraising and charitable trip to Kenya later this year.

Kate Nolan, from Barrymore, Kiltoom, is one of 50 players from across the country to sign-up to the trip, which is part of the ongoing fundraiser 'Plant the Planet Games', which was originally established by ex-Galway player Alan Kerins, in partnership with Self Help Africa.

Kate scored a point for Roscommon in their recent All-Ireland intermediate championship final win against Fermanagh and was a pivotal player throughout the campaign.

She is now hoping to raise €10,000, through idonate, to help Self Help Africa plant one-million trees in the fight against climate change and provide sustainable community livelihoods. The St Brigid's GAA player will be joined on the Kenyan trip by Roscommon team-mate Ellen Irwin (St Faithleach's), and 28 other inter-county players including Daire Cregg, from Boyle.

The initiative is supported by the Gaelic Players' Association and Warriors for Humanity. Kate and her fellow participants will travel to east Africa on November 20 and remain there for just over a week, where they will partake in physical environmental projects and also play exhibition matches.
