Celebrating a century: Offaly's Maureen turns 100
Neighbours, friends, relatives and well-wishers gathered at Riada House Community Nursing Unit in Tullamore last Saturday to celebrate the 100th birthday of Offaly woman Maureen Finn.
Among those in attendance on the day was former Taoiseach Brian Cowen, who presented Maureen with a framed letter from President Catherine Connolly who congratulated her on the remarkable milestone.
Maureen Finn was born on August 26, 1926, in Annaghmore, Kinnitty. She was the eldest of three children and has fond memories of growing up on the family farm with her brother Liam and sister Nan (Grimes).
As a young woman, Maureen spent several years in Galway before settling in Tullamore, where she has now lived for more than 50 years.
Despite a childhood accident that left her with a permanent impairment to her leg, she led an active and independent life. She travelled around Europe in her younger years and later learned to drive, enjoying the freedom and independence that it gave her.

She has a strong circle of friends, neighbours and family in Tullamore, whose friendship and support have meant a great deal to her over the years.
Maureen attributes her long life to remaining independent throughout.
She is not the only member of her family to enjoy a long life. Her sister Nan lived into her 96th year, while her brother Liam celebrated his 96th birthday earlier this month.
As she celebrates her 100th birthday, Maureen looks forward to many more years in the company of her family and friends.
