Road safety a focus of local Garda Division operation

Meath/Westmeath Garda Division have enacted a road safety operation targeting 'those who commit road traffic offences by passing a red light'.

The operation will remain in place today (Tuesday, October 13) with a spokesperson for the Division confirming that there is a "duty of care on the roads that includes cyclists and e-scooter users".

The Garda Division is also encouraging pedestrians "not to cross at a junction until it is safe to do so".

"We know traffic can be heavy in towns such as Athlone and Mullingar, particularly at school times, and we need to be mindful of young children who are travelling to and from school who use pedestrian crossings on their travels," the Garda Division spokesperson added.
