Athlone puppy Milo represents Westmeath at Petmania Puppy of the Year finals

Milo, a Dachshund from Athlone, represented Westmeath at the Pet Expo Grand Final, with his pet parent Kiara Touhey. He was one of the 26 finalists at the Petmania Puppy of the Year 2026 Grand Final, which had garnered 1414 entries from around the country.

The event was hosted by Eurovision legend and animal welfare advocate Linda Martin at National Show Centre, Dublin, where Milo competed in the North Leinster & Ulster category. Summer, a Labradoodle–Bernese Mountain Dog cross from Longford won the category title, while Ivy, a dalmatian from Mayo was crowned Overall Winner.

The pup is a much-loved weekly visitor at the nursing home run by his nana. The residents recognise the sound of Milo's bell in the corridors and enjoy spending time with him on walks, while he makes the most of the attention and treats.

Speaking about Milo’s personality and what inspired her to enter the competition, Kiara said: “We entered Milo because we think he’s such a little character and wanted to share his cheeky personality with everyone! He brings so much happiness into our lives, and we thought it would be a lovely way to show him off and celebrate how special he is to us.”

She added: “For anyone considering a puppy, our biggest advice would be to have plenty of patience and enjoy every little moment! Puppies are a lot of work and there will definitely be some sleepless nights and chewed-up belongings, but it’s all worth it. Be consistent with training, give them lots of love and make as many memories as you can because they grow up so quickly.”

This was the 11th edition of the competition.
