The late Tom O'Connor

Comhaltas Áth Luain pays tribute to former chairperson

Comhaltas Áth Luain has paid tribute to its former chairperson, Tom O'Connor, following his passing.

The Crannaghmore resident died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family in the tender care of the staff Retreat Nursing Home, Athlone, on Sunday.

Comhaltas Áth Luain said it was "deeply saddened" by the passing of its "former Chair", who was a "stalwart of the branch, with his family, for many years".

'It was our privilege to present him with a Gradam when we hosted Fleadh Cheoil Ros Comáin in April 2025,' Comhaltas Áth Luain said.

Extending 'heartfelt sympathies' to Tom's wife Breege, his daughters Anita, Aoife and Mary, his sons Tomás, Sean and Tadhg and his extended family and wide circle of friends, Comhaltas Áth Luain said that Tom will be 'fondly remembered and greatly missed by all our members, past and present'.

A fervent Kerry GAA supporter, the Abbeyfeale native was a regular supporter of The Kingdom's league and championship games which he attended alongside family members and close friends Denis O'Sullivan and Mike O'Connor.

Tom is predeceased by his parents Tadhg and Julia, and his brothers Willie and Joe.

He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his devoted wife Breege, his children Anita, Tomás, Seán, Mary, Aoife, and Tadhg, his grandchildren Darragh, Tighe, Caolán, Chloe, Daniel, Fionn, Kate, Michael and Tom, his brother Michael, sister Shelagh, sons-in-law John and Michael and daughters-in-law, Karen and Suzanne, extended family, relatives, neighbours, many friends and his beloved dog Shep.

Tom will repose at the family home in Crannaghmore, Athlone (N37 W0X7) on Tuesday from 3pm until 7pm.

Removal takes place on Wednesday to SS. Peter’s and Pauls Church, arriving for Funeral Mass at 1pm, followed by burial afterwards in Drum Cemetery.

May he rest in peace.
