St Mel’s Park sale to go through
Westmeath’s county councillors have formally agreed to dispose of the old St Mel’s Park football ground in Athlone to members of the Marist Order for the Marist College in Athlone.
St Mel's Park was the famous local home of Athlone Town FC before the club relocated to its current ground in Lissywollen.
The decision was made at the March meeting of the county council. Some 18 months ago, councillors had agreed to sell the land to the Marist College, but it transpired that legally the transfer needed to be made to individual members of the religious order, as the Marist College itself was not a legal entity.
The sale was agreed at a market value of €120,000.
