Gardai issue witness appeal after public order incident in Athlone

Gardai in Athlone are investigating a public order incident on Magazine Road in the town on Wednesday evening last, October 8, which resulted in two men receiving medical treatment for minor injuries.

A spokesperson for Athlone Gardai told the Westmeath Independent that their members had attended at the scene of an altercation which broke out at around 7pm on Wednesday evening, up from the junction of Magazine Road and the old Galway Road, towards Connaught Street.

Up to five men are believed to have been involved in the incident, and two men, aged in their 30s and 40s, received medical treatment at the scene for what were described as minor injuries.

Four men were arrested, and two, both aged in their 30s, appeared at a special sitting of Mullingar District Court yesterday (Sunday) where they were charged with public order offences.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Gardai say the area where the altercation took place was very busy at the time, and they have issued a public appeal for anyone who was in the Magazine Road area of Athlone between the hours of 6pm and 7.30pm on Wednesday evening last, October 8, and who may have witnessed this incident, to make contact with Athlone Garda Station on 090 6492600, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111, or any Garda station.
