Call to tackle flooding outside Coosan graveyard

Concerns have been raised to Athlone-Moate Municipal District of Westmeath County Council over road flooding at the entrance to Coosan Graveyard in Athlone.

The issue was raised at the council's February meeting, with Cllr. John Gibbons calling on the council to arrange for some flood alleviation works to be carried out at the location. Cllr. Gibbons described the area as a very busy location for pedestrians and cars, and that it is 'regularly flooded at times of high rainfall'.

In response, the council said a funding proposal to address the flooding at the location is included in a recent funding request to the Local Authority Waters Programme on foot of a requests for expressions of interest, and that the council was awaiting the outcome. In parallel, the council said, flood measures would be considered for inclusion in this year's programme in the context of the members' priorities and the funding available.
