Athlone Town women's team has learned its quarter-final fate as it bids to retain the FAI Cup this season.

Athlone Town women learns FAI Cup fate after last eight draw

Current holders Athlone Town has been drawn to face Shamrock Rovers in the quarter-finals of this season's Club Orange Women’s FAI Cup.

Today's draw drew up a host of local derbies and the four quarter-final matches are due to take place on the week ending Sunday, August 2.

Athlone secured a place in the last four by beating Peamount Utd, away, last weekend. New signing Sofia Stovold opened the scoring after goalkeeper Maria Matthaiou saved a penalty earlier in the contest. High-scoring striker Dana Scheriff added a second goal later on.

FAI head of women’s and girl’s football Lizzy Kent and association president Paul Cooke conducted the draw and clarity on dates and kick-off times are expected soon. This year's final is set to take place on Sunday, September 27 at Tallaght Stadium.

Last year’s beaten finalists Bohemians will face Shelbourne in a North Dublin derby, while Sligo Rovers make the short trip across Connacht to Galway Utd.

There’s an all-Cork affair elsewhere, as Douglas Hall – the only regional side left in the competition – welcome Cork City. Lily Agg's Athlone, meanwhile, are at home against Shelbourne tomorrow evening (Wednesday, July 7) as they continue to hunt down Galway Utd at the top of the League of Ireland Women's Premier Division.
