New long-range bike hire service set to launch in Athlone later this summer

Plans to introduce a bike hire service in Athlone this summer are nearing completion, according to Westmeath County Council.

Responding to a question from Cllr. Frankie Keena at a recent Municipal District meeting, the council confirmed that discussions with the identified provider are at an advanced stage regarding a licence agreement to operate a pilot bike hire service.

The proposed scheme will be based at Athlone Marina and, subject to the successful completion of the agreement, is expected to commence shortly during the summer of 2026.

The new bike hire being tendered is for heavier bikes for long-range cycling along the greenway, rather than short range bikes such as those already in Athlone town centre.

The pilot initiative is aimed at providing an additional transport and tourism amenity, with further details expected once the licence agreement has been finalised.
