Community Games joy for local area

There was great success for the Drum/Clonown/Monksland areas last weekend, as its GAA and soccer teams lifted silverware at the 2026 Connacht Community Games Finals in Sligo.

The area's U12 girls soccer team took the provincial title by defeating Oranmore/Maree (Galway) in the semi-finals on Sunday, before overcoming Aughanagh (Sligo) in the decider later in the day.

On its way to the Connacht finals, Drum/Clonown/Monksland – which boasts players from local clubs Bealnamulla, Moore Utd, St Joseph's and St Francis - had hard-fought victories against teams from Knockcroghery, Kiltoom and Castlerea.

Meanwhile, the area's U10 boys was also crowned Connacht GAA champions on Saturday, after outstanding displays against Cong (Mayo) in the semi-finals and Annaghdown (Galway) in the final. Both sets of management teams congratulated its players and also their parents for the commitment and endeavour shown to the cause in recent months.

Both Drum/Clonown/Monksland teams now progress to represent Roscommon at the All-Ireland Community Games Finals, to be held in Carlow on the weekend August 23.

The U10 GAA team included Alex McGrath, Joe Curley, Fionn Duignam, Kealan Dully, Charlie Furey, Jamie Ceever, Cillian Keegan, Harry Kehoe, Eanna Kelly, KC King, Ethan Opaczewski, Eoghan Pettit, Aaron Shine, James Shine and Jack Walsh.

The girls soccer team included Sophie Fallon, Millie Ward, Sarah-Jane Dunne, Katie Keegan, Cara Rooney, Caoibhe Duffy, Ella Conway, Kate Shine, Sally Allen, Mollie Kelly.
