Long-serving Athlone dentist Gordon Ballantyne mourned

Gordon Ballantyne, a retired dentist who cared for patients in Athlone over the course of several decades, has died.

Mr Ballantyne, of Ashley Crescent, Athlone, and formerly of the Retreat Road, died suddenly on Saturday last, August 8.

Over the course of his career he was highly-regarded both for his professional expertise and his friendly and courteous manner.

One of the many tributes paid to him this week stated: "He was my childhood dentist and I will always remember his warmth, kindness and reassuring manner. He made every visit feel easy."

Mr Ballantyne was practising at Garden Vale in Athlone up to the time of his retirement. His son Elliott, who followed in his father's footsteps by pursuing a career in dentistry, succeeded him in Garden Vale for a spell.

The deceased was a lifelong member and supporter of Buccaneers Rugby Club, and served as its president in 2018/2019.

The club said the news of Mr Ballantyne's passing was met with "great shock and immense sadness" at Dubarry Park.

"Softly spoken and a true gentleman, Gordon served in various roles on the club's executive committee for a number of years," said Buccaneers RFC.

Mr Ballantyne was predeceased by his beloved wife, Christine, and brother Raymond.

He is sadly missed by his loving sons, Elliott and Gregory, his partner Kay, daughters-in-law Natalie and Rimante, sister Denise, his adoring grandchildren Emily, Sophia, Alex and Harry, in-laws, nephews, nieces, relatives and many friends.

He will be reposing at Flynn's Funeral Home, The Strand, Athlone, this Thursday evening from 6pm until 8pm.

His funeral Mass will be held in St Mary's Church on Friday at 10.30am, followed by burial in Coosan Cemetery.
