Alan Sheehan has been appointed to an assistant coaching role with the Wales national football team.

Sheehan's appointment to the role marks a return to football management for the Athlone native who was dismissed as Swansea City head coach in November 2025.

A statement issued by the Welsh FA on Monday afternoon confirmed Sheehan's appointment, alongside former Wales international centre back, Ashley Williams.

'Sheehan, a UEFA Pro Licence holder, was Swansea City’s head coach in 2025 after two periods as interim head coach and has previously held roles as assistant coach at Swansea City, Southampton and Luton Town.

'As a player, Sheehan made over 400 appearances in the English Football League and was capped five times for Republic of Ireland U21s'.

Sheehan will work with Wales head coach Craig Bellamy as the country prepares for the start of its UEFA Nations League 'A' campaign.

Wales start with consecutive away fixtures against Portugal and Denmark on September 24 and September 27 respectively, before two home matches with Norway on October 1 and Denmark on October 4.
