Young Sportsperson of the Year finalist: Aimee Greene

Rising soccer star Aimee Greene, 14, had the distinction of captaining the Republic of Ireland women's U-15 team at the UEFA development tournament in Zagreb, Croatia in August.

Aimee, also a renowned LGFA player with Garrycastle, played a crucial role as Ireland began the three-game tournament with a convincing 5-0 victory against the host nation. Ireland were on the wrong side of a narrow defeat against Slovakia in the second outing and finished the tournament with defeat against a strong Ukraine side.

The experience of captaining and playing for her country will no doubt stand Aimee in good stead for the future, after she also represented the Republic of Ireland at U-13 level earlier in 2026. On that occasion, Aimee was among a group of 34 U-13 players (divided into two squads of 17) chosen to play against Northern Ireland and Isle of Man at a competition in Limerick.

From Mount Temple and a second-year student at Moate Community School, Aimee also played a major role in Temple Villa's stellar run to the semi-finals of the U-14 SFAI National Cup earlier this year.

The team was the first Temple Villa representatives at any level to reach the last four of a national competition when goals by Eliza Mallon and Grace Pillion secured a quarter-final win against Kilnamanagh.

In April, that fantastic Cup run came to an end with defeat against Peamount United in the last four, but her impact throughout the Cup journey undoubtedly played its part in her elevation to captain of the country's U-15 side. Aimee has also represented the Midlands League representative side at the Gaynor Cup tournament.

Aimee recently captained Leinster Schools U-15 girls to victory at the Dr Fionnuala Quigley Memorial tournament, which was competed for by all four provinces and held in Athlone. Last weekend, she was also to the fore when Athlone Town's U-17 team clinched the League of Ireland title with a dramatic last-day victory against Shelbourne.

Aimee was also a prominent figure as Garrycastle defeated Loughnavalley in this year's Westmeath LGFA Under-14 Division 1 Championship final and she has represented Westmeath at U-14 level

A daughter of Denise and Michael Greene, who are both well-known in local sporting circles, Aimee came through the ranks at the Temple Villa club before recently joining Athlone Town at U-17 level.

Her siblings, Mikaela (15), Nicole (12) and Mikey (10) are also sports enthusiasts and represent Temple Villa FC (soccer), Garrycastle (GAA), and Athlone Swimming Club.

The Young Sportsperson of the Year finalists are Ally Duffy, Enda Browne and Aimee Greene.
