Shandonagh's Adam Treannor and Caulry's John Maguire in action during the Westmeath SFC game last Saturday week.

Rosemount and Caulry bid to bounce back from defeats

Rosemount and Caulry will be on missions of atonement in the second round of the Westmeath SFC this weekend.

The need to bounce back will surely be particularly keen for Rosemount, who only managed to score a meagre total of 0-4 in their heavy defeat to Mullingar Shamrocks in the opening round. Ian Bradley's charges will take on Shandonagh in Section B on Sunday at TEG Cusack Park (12.00).

For their part, Caulry - who lost to Shandonagh 3-12 to 3-7 in their opening game - will meet Killucan tomorrow (Saturday). Shandonagh were reduced to 14 men just before half-time but Caulry were unable to take advantage of the extra man, despite a goal from substitute Senan Baker and a second three-pointer from Paddy Sleator.

Athlone and Garrycastle played out a keenly contested draw (0-9 apiece) in the opening round and both clubs are in action at TEG Cusack Park tomorrow (Saturday). Garrycastle face 2020 finalists Tyrrellspass at 3.30pm and with the sky blue outfit having lost to Coralstown-Kinnegad in their first Section A game, both sides will be eager for victory.

On Saturday evening (6pm), Athlone face a very tough task against The Downs, who overcame reigning champions St Loman's Mullingar in the first round. Both Athlone and The Downs were losing semi-finalists last year, but the underage success the black and amber outfit have enjoyed in recent years means they are regarded as a rising force.

The following Westmeath SFC games will be streamed live on Iarmhí TV this weekend: Garrycastle v Tyrrellspass, Athlone v The Downs, Rosemount v Shandonagh and St Loman's v Coralstown-Kinnegad.

In the Westmeath IFC, the action gets underway this evening (Friday) when Tubberclair meet St Mary’s Rochfortbridge at Páirc Chiaráin, Athlone (8pm).

Last year's junior champions Tubberclair marked their return to the intermediate ranks with a victory over Kilbeggan Shamrocks last Saturday week. Alan Coffey scored 2-3 for Tubberclair with Fred Kelleher contributing 0-7 in that Section B game.

Castledaly face Maryland in Mount Temple on Sunday at 6.30pm, a later throw-in than the originally scheduled time. Having been demoted from the senior ranks last year, Castledaly drew with Tang in their Section A opening round clash.

Tang and Milltownpass - the defeated finalists from the last two years - will do battle in Kilbeggan on Sunday (11.30), while Ballymore will meet St Malachy's in Moate on Saturday. It looks a difficult assignment for Ballymore with Malachy's having claimed an emphatic win over Maryland in their opening game.

On Saturday evening, Kilbeggan Shamrocks will face a Milltown side who overcame Multyfarnham in their Section B first round game.
