South Roscommon councillor calls for clarity on modular homes

Clarity is needed about current policy and enforcement around modular homes as rapidly deployed housing solutions, a meeting of Roscommon County Council has heard.

At the September meeting of the local authority, Curraghboy's Cllr Tony Ward said he has been receiving regular calls from constituents about modular housing and questioned how the council is handling regulations and enforcement.

"Even today I got phone calls asking about the modular home situation. What is the council’s position? People need answers," he said.

There were references to recent enforcement actions taken against individuals who had installed modular homes, with concerns about the lack of clear guidance for residents seeking to use modular units, often as affordable or urgent housing options.

While not formally on the agenda for the meeting, councillors indicated that modular housing warranted further discussion, especially as the county grapples with housing shortages, rising construction costs, and the need for fast, flexible housing alternatives.

A request was made for the issue to be clarified by planning officials and addressed more comprehensively at a future meeting of Roscommon County Council.
