Warning as new customs charges for online orders to take effect from July 1

Revenue has reminded consumers that new customs rules for online purchases from outside the EU, including Great Britain, will come into effect from Wednesday, July 1.

Under the changes, a €3 customs duty charge will apply to each item in parcels valued at €150 or less purchased from non-EU countries. VAT will continue to apply as normal.

The charge may be collected at checkout by the retailer or by the delivery company before the goods are delivered.

Revenue is urging shoppers to check where goods are being shipped from and to read retailers' terms and conditions carefully to avoid unexpected costs.

The new rules will also affect returns, as the €3 customs duty will generally not be refunded unless goods are faulty. Consumers are also advised to check retailers' policies on VAT refunds for returned items.

Revenue said the changes are aimed at creating a fairer trading environment for Irish and EU businesses.

Further information is available on the Revenue website and includes examples of how the charge is applied per item.
