Local Fire Service helps rescue fisherman from river

A disabled fisherman had a lucky escape after falling into the River Brosna in Ballycumber on Wednesday.

The man was fishing on the Riverside walk, beside Healy's pub, when the incident occurred. It appears that his wheelchair rolled forward from the path and careered down a steep embankment before entering the water. The alarm was raised shortly before 5pm with two units of the fire brigade from Clara, including a water rescue team, arriving shortly afterwards.

After removing the man from the river the fire crew provided first aid until the arrival of an ambulance. After additional treatment by paramedics he was transferred to Tullamore hospital by ambulance. It's understood his injuries are not life-threatening.
