Athlone GAA boys to compete in Féile football feast

The wait is nearly over for the Athlone GAA U15 boys team who will represent Westmeath in this year’s John West National Féile Peile na nÓg which will take place in Derry this Saturday, June 27.

Having won the county Feile in April after a hard fought win over The Downs in the final, players and management have eagerly awaited their opportunity to compete on the national stage.

Over the past few weeks the Féile committee have been busy sorting out logistics and organising a fundraising campaign to help cover the considerable costs associated with such a trip. Thankfully club members, families and the wider Athlone community have been very supportive and that has made things easier in terms of planning ahead for what promises to be a memorable weekend in the lives of the 26 players travelling.

Special word of mention to Athlone native, Sinead O'Sullivan, now residing in New York, and The Bounty Bar, who jointly sponsored all of the gear for each of the players and management.

The team will depart from Páirc Chiaráin, Athlone at 10am tomorrow morning (Friday) and will base themselves in Letterkenny, Co. Donegal. Their matches on Saturday will take place in Bellaghy GAA grounds in Derry.

First up they will take on Monaghan champions Scotstown followed by Mountmellick (Laois) and Corofin (Clare). The other group in their Division contains host club Bellaghy, London, Oliver Plunketts (Louth) and Nenagh Eire Óg (Tipperary).

Westmeath hurling representatives Clonkill won Division 2 of Féile last weekend which was a great achievement. Athlone will be aiming to bring more silverware home to the Lake County this weekend.
